This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague and friend, Professor Evan Ellis of the U.S. Army War College, the news that President Trump announces that in office he will raise tariffs on Mexico and Canada.

Mexico is at the heart of this conversation because Mr. Trump wants Mexico to control the border, stop the flow of undocumented

people coming through Mexico into the United States, and also control, stop entirely, the fentanyl

trade into the United States that is responsible for tens of thousands of death.

What is to be done?

Well, first of all, clearly President Trump's statement, or President Elect Trump's

statement regarding his intention to impose an immediate 25% tariff on Mexican products as well

as Canadian products is meant as a bargaining tool to get Mexico's attention to indicate that you

have to move to solve these issues that are clearly impacting U.S. security and well-being.

And the two big ones certainly are the control of immigrants flowing through Mexican territory

across the border and control of drugs.

Well, clearly, you know, the Mexicans have their own issues with the United States.

But the relationship, although President Scheinbaum had a cordial initial call with President

Trump following his election, and I think there's certainly a hope or an

intention to try to manage the relationship, despite the intentions, in a cordial way,

much as Manuel Andres-Lopez-Ovedore-Amlo managed the relationship positively, despite similar

tensions during his six-enioia during his period in office.
