This is John Batchel, a conversation with colleague David Diyud of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy about the question unanswered to my information at this point.

What happens to the Gazans after the fighting is done and the rebuilding begins?

Where do they go? David addresses it in terms of they will return. However, in between our debates, as I understand, about Gaza not

being a livable space for years, perhaps forever, given the destruction.

Is David Dayou to answer an impossible to answer question at this point?

Well, Egypt doesn't want it.

And look, you know, there's kind of a, I don't know, it's unclear where Israeli policy stands on this because you have statements off-the-cuff statements from, including cabinet officials from the far

right, saying the goal is to expel the Palestinians and Gaza. We have the prime minister of Israel

who's told us for years, even prior to October 7th, that the buck stops with him on policy. And he's saying that the stated policy

of the state of Israel is not to expel Palestinians from this territory. The stated policy is to

ensure that they're out of harm's way, that during the rebuilding process, they're not made

to necessarily suffer.

I suppose time will tell, but my genuine hope is that Israel will continue to move in a moral and legal direction on this and not one that gives into worse instincts.
