Judy Dempsey in Berlin for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, about a German state

election very critical in these last days. North Rhine-West failure, the most populous of German states,

and not in the east where AFD, the protest party, has been strong, but in the West,

dominated by laborer and manufacturing, North Rhine West failure. Why did it switch in some fashion

tripling the vote for AFD? Is this a national trend? Judy speaks to all that and also the major issue

of migration now and in the past. Is Judy to explain North Rhine-Westphalia and the excitement

in Germany about the switch towards a populist party that speaks against migrants.

They are living there, but, I mean, there's a huge population of integrated Turks who came in the late 1950s to help Germany deal with the economic miracle, they were brought over by, by, from Turkey,

in the belief that they might go home, well, they stayed here, and but they are not liked by the AFDA.

And there's been attacks on the Turkish communities and on immigration communities in North Ryan, Risfarland.

And when I used to work in the former capital Bonn, there was a horrible attack on a Turkish house in Solingen,

in the early 1990s.

It's anti-immigration is a pet topic of AFD supporters,

and it's a big, big issue.
