This is John Batchelor, a conversation with my colleague Selina Zito of the Washington Examiner

and writing the middle of Somewhere column about John Fetterman, the senator from Braddock, Pennsylvania,

Democrat, who is surprising everyone in the Senate by speaking practically, or as Selena puts it pragmatically.

An old-fashioned Democrat from Pennsylvania, Keystone State,

the kind my grandfather campaigned against back in the 40s and 50s

when he was a ward leader in Montgomery County,

a Democrat who's both a union man and looks to

issues that are conservative, politically, financially, socially, an old-fashioned Democrat,

which is why I see now and again on social media, why isn't Fetterman a Republican? He's not a Republican. He's a Democrat.

You want to see a Republican, a modern Republican, look to David McCormick, who resembles an

old-fashioned Republican, both sides of an issue of Pennsylvania that can go either way. The Keystone

state, the center of the bridgestones, holds it all together.

John Fettelman and David McCormick are very much the same kind of senator with different parties.

Or as Salina says, they're responsible to their state, not to their party first. State first, party second. This is Selina Zito on John

Well, I think that what we are seeing is what I saw for 18 years as the mayor of Braddock.

So this is who John Federman has always been. He won the mayoral race in 2005 by one vote. And it was an

absentee vote, right? So he's always understood the importance of representing wherever you are

from.

But he has always been this guy.

Now, there was, he was a shadow of himself, and I would argue wasn't himself at all during
