This is John Batchel, speaking to colleague Bridget Toomey, who watches the Houthis for the Foundation for

Defense of Democracy, about famine in the land. Once Yemen was 26 million. After decades of fighting,

it's unclear what the number is now. However, famine is often mentioned in reporting food insecurity, a safe large way to

describe something that is gradual and then overwhelms the population. The U.S. Air Campaign does not

have a feed-the-huthies moment. Whether it stops now or goes on,

we're looking at a country that is racked with food insecurity.

So Yemen's had a huge refugee food crisis for years now.

The airstrikes have, they've been targeted and intended to limit civilian impact.

And the, unfortunately, the United Nations has not been able to continue activity the way it would like to serve the Northern Yemeni population.

However, some of that activity had to be

suspended even prior to this U.S. operation because the Houthis really aren't interested in

helping the Yemeni people. The Houthis routinely detain aid workers. They exploit aid for

profit. So this has been a difficult environment to help the Yemeni people in long

before the U.S. began the operation.
