This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague Bob Zimmerman. China, the Earth Moon system.

0:08.0

China puts three satellites up, a constellation of them, in lunar space. Why? Bob explains, China has a plan, a plan to get to the moon.

0:18.5

It's following through on its plan very, very strictly.

0:22.0

Is Bob Zimmerman to explain.

0:24.9

China's plan for the Earth-Moon system.

0:28.3

More of this tonight.

0:29.7

No, lunar space meaning it's far from Earth, but they call it cis-luner.

0:34.2

I just don't like that term because it's kind of jogging.

0:36.7

But what China did was it wanted to test communications linking between multiple satellites

0:46.3

in deep space and also test them working linked with Earth orbit as well.

0:51.3

So they did this.

0:52.3

This is a technology test satellite constellation.

0:55.3

They sent two satellites to deep space, essentially lunar space, but maybe beyond the moon

1:01.8

or in it, in what's called a retrograde orbit that includes the Earth's moon system.

1:09.2

And those two satellites were in kind of different places in this lunar space region,

1:14.6

maybe a million miles plus from Earth.

1:17.6

And one of the third satellite was in Earth orbit.

1:19.6

And they have tested now with those three satellites, communication links and the technology

1:24.6

necessarily used this.

1:25.6

And this is part of if you're going to have any kind of lunar base, you want to have

1:30.1

full-time communications, and you're going to need a constellation of satellites in space

1:35.0

to do it.
