It's a thoughtful but not incredulous examination of radical direct action.

Rationally, I'm incredibly skeptical of the approach taken by groups like the Earth Liberation Front,

but emotionally, I'm very sympathetic to their motivations, especially at a time when the

Supreme Court is gutting environmental regulations.

It tells the story of activist Daniel G. McGowan of the ELF from his

first arson attacks in 1996, does 2005 arrest by the DOJ. The film also examines the ethics of the ELF at

large and how terrorism is to be defined. So a good summary of what this film is and what it's all

about. And I think fairly easy to see why people voted for this

one, particularly in the current moment, you know, after a very dispiriting election in the U.S.,

after a very dispiriting primary season, when the horizons of possibility that seemed within

view even four years ago have been, shall we say, foreclosed on. Even with the discourse that followed the

shooting of United Health CEO, Brian Thompson, there's been a lot of discourse about, well,

the horizons of possibility seems so limited. What can we do? At what point and to what extent

is direct action strategically advisable or morally permissible?

Those are questions that are asked a lot in this movie.

Although this movie comes from a very different socio-political milieu than the one we currently live in,

it comes from, or it depicts activity coming from West Coast, 90s, radical environmentalism.

Yeah, and I want to just say off the top, I mean, my reaction to it, I mean, I think, you know,

what I just read from the Lister nominated is a pretty good, you know, summation of my own views going

into this.
