Herzog himself is someone who has brought elements of, for want of a better word, fiction into his documentaries to illustrate a larger truth.

The example that always comes to my mind is in Little Dieter needs to fly.

The film about the air pilot in the Vietnam War who escaped captivity, there's a scene early in that movie when Dieter Dangler, you know,

opens and closes a door over and over again and says, ah, yes, ever since I was released,

I like to open doors over and over because it reminds me of freedom. And as Herzog has said,

that's just something he and Dangler made up when they were shooting. Because Dangler said

something about, you know, back in the 60s or 70s

when he was free he opened a door more than once for that reason and they said well why don't why don't

we make that part of your persona in this documentary that's an example of the sort of quote unquote

ecstatic truth that herzog often indulges in and which this movie incident at Loch Nass sort of interrogates.

So, Luke, did you like this movie?

I got to say, I had a lot of fun watching this.

This movie is basically, it's burden of dreams meets spinal tap.

And I think the result is very satisfying.

One of the things I find most extraordinary about it is how Herzog is basically entirely convincing as somebody who is not acting at all throughout the whole of this movie.

I guess some of the more ridiculous scenes at the end are maybe kind of an exception to that, but I don't know.

Even there, he's like a pretty good actor.

But I think what makes this film work for me is that in all

the scenes that are just kind of normal scenes where, you know, they're on the deck of the ship

or whatever, or he's got a camera in his hand, or he's interviewing someone. It's, it's no different

from any quote-unquote real footage of Herzog doing this that you've seen elsewhere. So, yeah,

I thought the result was very satisfying.
