Summary

We're in a contemplative mood on this episode, and there's no filmmaker better suited for such a mood than Yasujirō Ozu. We discuss his final film, AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON (1962), and how Ozu's seemingly narrow thematic and stylistic palette encompasses so much of the human condition. Now, when Luke suggested this one, when he said it was his last movie, I of course knew what it was,

0:18.3

because I remembered what the color looked like in it, and I remembered the title. But then I had to think, wait, what happened in that one?

which is basically the story of an autumn afternoon, though in radishes and carrots,

1:06.5

the parent had cancer, which, you know, was the thing that Ozu ultimately died of. But yeah,

1:12.3

this film is very easy to confuse with late spring. I've seen both movies, but I'd forgotten

1:16.9

about all of the sort of B stories in this movie. I'd forgotten about the similarities it shares

1:22.3

with what I think is the only Ozu movie we've done a treatment for on this podcast, which is his

1:27.2

wonderful comedy, Good Morning. And mind podcast, which is his wonderful comedy,

1:28.3

Good Morning. And mind you, the difference between the comedies and the tragedies can be one of

1:34.0
