George W. Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1946. His family moved to Texas two years later so that his

father could work in the oil industry. When he was in seventh grade, George went to the same

junior high school in Midland, Texas, as his future wife Laura Welch, although they didn't meet each

other there. After graduating from Yale University with a history degree in 1968, he became

involved in the oil industry and settled down in Houston, Texas. At that time, he lived in the same apartment complex as

It wasn't until 1977 at a barbecue party in Midland that the two met and fell in love. They were married

later. Bush ran for a congressional seat in Texas in 1978, but lost. He then focused on the oil business

with lots of success. In 1988, George moved his family to Washington, D.C. to help manage

his father's presidential campaign. Following the election, he served for four years as a volunteer

to help repair homes. In 1999, he also became part owner and managing partner of Major League

Baseball's Texas Rangers. He was very popular in the state of Texas and decided to

run for governor in 1994. He was able to defeat the popular incumbent Ann Richards and serve as

governor of Texas for six years. Governor Bush was very popular and was often talked about as being

a compassionate conservative because he believed in limited government but also supported social programs.

George W. Bush carried his tremendous popularity into the 2000 election, but had a tall mountain to climb.

The odds were against him from the start because Bill Clinton's eight years in office

were full of economic growth, and his vice president, Al Gore, stood between George W. Bush and the presidency.
