Thank you, Noah, for introducing Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States.

Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Barack's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was a white woman born in Kansas who moved to Hawaii

two years before Barack was born.

Barack's father, also Barack Obama, was a black man born in Kenya who went to the University of Hawaii

to study economics. In 1960, Barack Sr. and Stanley Ann got married at a time when interracial

marriage was still illegal in more than half of the United States. They had a baby the

next year and named him Barack, which means blessed, although Barack Jr. would often go by the name

Barry as a child. Barack Obama's parents divorced when he was two years old and his father returned to Kenya.

His mother married an Indonesian man when Barack was six and the family moved to Indonesia.

Just one year later, Barack Obama's mother would split from her husband once again.

That year, Barack Obama Sr. traveled to Hawaii to reconcile with Stanley Ann, but she was not

Just a few years later, Stanley Ann moved to Indonesia to pursue her career, leaving her two children with her parents.

Barack Obama attended Columbia University and then Harvard Law School. It was during his Harvard years that he met Michelle, his future wife. During the summer,

Barack interned at the Chicago Law Office of Sidley and Austin. While he was an intern,

Michelle was practicing law there. Barack graduated from Harvard Law in 1991 and married Michelle the following year. As a lawyer,

Barack Obama was involved in a case that involved local politics and inspired his interest to dive
