of Defense and Foreign Affairs. My guide on strategic thinking, and that we're looking

at the 21st century. We've been discussing 1066 and all that up to the coronation of

King Charles III. But the British Empire is glorious as it was, and as vital as it is

to the defense of Australia and other parts of the Indo-Pacific, is not adequate to meet

the ambitions of one man. His name is Xi Jinping. He is now the ruler of the People's Republic

of China's Chinese Communist Party. It's important to make a distinction. He leads the party.

The party is all powerful because of its brutality and threat to the people of the mainland.

And yet, all of this power, what does he do with it? How is he conducting his affairs?

Gregory, your first observation is that there's alienation on the mainland. How so?

Well, the alienation is the inevitable consequence of dissatisfaction among the urban, unemployed

or disenfranchised. We have to bear in mind that the revolution which took place after

the death of the Qing Dynasty Empress Dowager, Xi in 1908, was caused to a large extent by unrest

in the cities, unrest by migrant workers from the country coming in the cities, unable

to find work and becoming disenfranchised and mobilized. That's happening today to a great

degree in the People's Republic of China. Bear in mind that the People's Republic of China

is an artificial construct. It's not the legal successor to Imperial China. That the legal

successor to Imperial China was the Republic of China, which is now based in Taiwan. The People's

Republic of China is a party apparatus. People's liberation is a party army, much like the SS was

Nazi party's army. You've got a communist party of China with its military in an artificial

state which does not really represent the people and the people are well aware of that by and large.

In 1912 period, you had about 9% of the population urbanized. Yet that was enough to
