Conversation with my colleague Rick Fisher of the International Assessment and Strategy

Center about the surveillance balloons in the news again because of revelations in the

leaks if the leaks are to be trusted.

Surveillance balloons targeting a carrier battle group and other parts of the U.S. national

security.

What is striking is that Rick moves the story from watching nuclear missile bases or

air force bases or carrier battle groups to what he calls the battle for near space.

And China is at an advantage with these balloons.

Here's Rick's explanation.

Well John, we already know from foreign press revelations, foreign press reports that

China has launched multiple balloons of the type that traversed the United States with

similar surveillance packages.

But the suggestion that the balloon was maneuverable enough to intercept an American aircraft

carrier battle group just further demonstrates that these balloons are a secondary strategic

targeting system for the people's liberation army.

And it is an indication that China expects that surveillance satellites in low-worth orbit

will be taken out.

Now we will take them out.

Will China's destruction of all of our satellites create enough debris to take out their satellites

as well?

Are they already planning to compensate for that?
