How has it taken me so long to get to a topic that I am SO passionate about? I am beyond excited to open up the conversation of kids’ health with my friend, Katie Kimball (of Kitchen Stewardship and Kids Cook Real Food.) Katie is an author, podcaster, and Ted Talk Speaker. She loves to encourage parents to introduce their kids to a wide variety of foods, teach kids about nutrition, and get kids in the kitchen to cook real food!
In today’s conversation, Katie shares some eye-opening statistics about the state of health for average American kids, (spoiler alert: It’s not good) but she does not stop there. Katie offers practical advice for how we can turn the tide, fix some bad habits, and raise kids who value nutrition and know how to be a good guest at others’ homes, even if what they’re serving is “not their favorite.” 😉 Katie answers a bunch of questions sent in from my Instagram stories as well. Prepare for a really helpful and practical episode! Find show notes at: http://www.monicaswanson.com/katie-kimball

0:07.5 | Aloha friends, welcome back to the podcast, and I think you're going to love today's conversation. |
0:13.5 | I'm actually just asking myself how it took me so long to bring this topic to the podcast. |
0:18.5 | This is a topic I'm passionate about. |
0:20.7 | It is a topic that comes up pretty much |
0:22.5 | every day in the Swanson household. My husband, you may know, is a doctor, and health and nutrition |
0:28.2 | is super important to him. And if you happen to read my book, Boy Mom, which came out in 2019, |
0:34.2 | I have a whole section in there about the importance of raising healthy kids. That book covers the |
0:38.8 | things your sons need most from you, and one of them is a healthy foundation. Because as I say in that |
0:45.2 | book, kids are not born knowing what is good for them and what is not. When they're real young, |
0:50.8 | they eat what we give them. And then as they grow up, they eat what we allow |
0:54.7 | them to have. And so we have quite a responsibility as parents to give our kids a healthy |
1:00.4 | foundation for the best chance of them growing up to be healthy and also to educate them and |
1:05.8 | help them understand how to make good choices as they grow up. So again, I love this topic. I hope you do too, |
1:12.2 | because I'd really like to bring more conversations here to the podcast about kids and nutrition |
1:17.1 | and all the things we are opening up today. Now, today I'm super excited because I am |
1:22.7 | bringing Katie Kimball on. Katie has had a kitchen stewardship blog for many years. She also has kids cook |
1:29.9 | real food. She loves to talk about bringing kids into the kitchen. And today she's going to |
1:34.3 | explain how that can help them make better health choices. So we talk about a lot. We kind of hang |
1:41.4 | out talking about picky eaters. So if you've got one of those, I think this is going to be |
1:44.9 | helpful. I throw some Q&As at her from things people sent in through my Instagram stories. |
1:50.7 | And I think you're going to learn a lot and be encouraged and equipped to raise kids to be a little |
