Summary

In some parts of the world, girls are as likely to be married off or trafficked as they are to be educated. Photojournalist and TED Fellow Smita Sharma thoughtfully depicts overlooked girls and young women, while making sure not to disrupt the lives of her subjects in the process. Her work shows what might otherwise remain hidden -- the first step to changing the story.

0:35.2	spray pesticide at a tea garden in West Bengal, India.
0:40.6	Lucky was a single father to his only daughter, Suji.
0:46.0	One day, in 2007, Suji went missing.
0:51.7	Lucky went to the local police to file a missing person's report,
0:56.0	but he was unable to do so because he was illiterate. He didn't have Suji's birth certificate
1:03.2	or any of her photographs. So the police didn't believe him and did nothing.
1:11.9	He tried again and again, but no luck.
1:17.4	It was as if Suji never existed.
1:20.4	Ten years later, a local non-profit that fights human trafficking took up her case.
1:28.1	They approached Suji's school and requested proof that she had attended.
1:34.2	It bothered me that the disappearance of a poor girl
1:37.6	doesn't matter to anyone except her family.

1:46.7	and I report on critical human rights and social issues,
