Summary

Peter Leo is an applied exercise physiologist and high performance coach from Austria. Peter has done extensive research in profiling performance and physiological characteristics of U23 cyclists which we discuss in this interview. We also discuss power profiling and using Critical Power.   IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: -Best practices for power profiling (e.g. formal testing vs. raw training data) and methodological considerations -What is Critical Power, and why use that as a main physiological marker over others (such as MLSS and FTP) -Power changes in U23 cyclists across a season -How training characteristics (e.g. training intensity distribution as well as added load from racing) impacted the change in power profile across the season -Practical takeaways from these studies - what can we learn when thinking about how we go about our own training and racing across an entire season?     SHOWNOTES: https://scientifictriathlon.com/tts319/   SCIENTIFIC TRIATHLON AND THAT TRIATHLON SHOW WEBPAGE: www.scientifictriathlon.com/podcast/   SPONSORS: ROKA - Exceptional quality triathlon wetsuits, trisuits, swimskins, goggles, performance sunglasses as well as prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses.  Online vision test for prescription updates and home try-on options available for eyeglasses. Hey, what's up everybody and welcome back to another episode of That Traathlon Show, the podcast

I'm our host Michael and first of all, I hope that your 2022 is off to a great start.

0:32.4

And hopefully this great science-packed interview about cycling and endurance sports can

0:36.7

make it even better

0:37.9

and more enjoyable. On today's episode, I interview Dr. Peter Leo, who is a sports scientist and

0:43.5

cycling coach from Austria. As part of his PhD research, Peter did extensively work in profiling

0:49.9

performance and physiological characteristics of under 23 cyclists.

0:55.4

So in this interview we discuss this work, as well as a lot of the general aspects

1:00.1

and practical advice and takeaways around power profiling and also using critical power.

1:06.4

But before we get into the interview with Peter, big thanks to our sponsors, Roka.

Roka produced exceptional quality triathlon wetsuits, trisuits, swimskins, goggles, performance sunglasses and prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. If you want to go faster in the water or on the bike, a Roka wetsuit or trisuit might be for you, or if you just want to have a more comfortable, functional and stylish pair of eyeglasses, then look to their range of eyewear. Today I want to highlight Roka's sim shorts, which are neoprene shorts to add buoyancy

in the pool. This has several benefits in that it allows you to train the specific body position

1:39.5

of swimming in a wetsuit without having to actually bring the wetsuit to the pool. It allows you to learn and understand good body position if that's something you struggle with.

1:48.5

And it can also help you add more swimming volume in particular when your legs are tired and

1:53.5

sinky from bike and run training.

1:55.3

And it can also help you better work on other points for improvement in your stroke than just body position

2:00.5

when the shorts

2:01.8

take care of body position for you, for example, focusing on a particular aspect of your stroke

2:05.9

mechanics. The sim shorts are brilliant quality shorts, they have great buoyancy and are extremely

durable. I can highly recommend them. Visit roca.com for tTS for 20% of your order.
