I think there is a political problem about Trump and how he responds, but there also is just

sort of an intellectual problem, which is that these are hard knots to untie. And even if you

accept that there's no right-wing conspiracy behind the shooter, there's no left-wing conspiracy

behind that one, to not engage in a kind of form of collective sanction or collective punishment for an individual act

is hard to do and the lines are fuzzy sometimes, you know?

And I think that one thing that is sort of the bleakest about this to me is you just see

how much the kind of ubiquity of threat and the presence of threat

really does that the margins kind of mess with or change

how politicians of all kinds react.

Yeah. Hello and welcome. Why is this happening with me, your host, Chris Hayes. This past year, we have seen an unnerving amount of political violence in the U.S.

You can tick through a bunch of examples, the assassination and attempted assassination of two Minnesota state legislators that

happened over the summer, the fire bombing of the governor's mansion in Pennsylvania,

Josh Shapiro, the assassination on a college campus in Utah of Charlie Kirk. That's just a few

that come to mind.

There are many, many more, obviously last year

the attempted assassination of Donald Trump

that also happened in Pennsylvania.

And there's been a lot of discourse around political violence.

A lot of it, I think, extremely heated

or an attempt to kind of heal
