Learn Persian with Chaiang Conversation Lesson 75

Hello and welcome to Lesson 75 of Learn Persian with Chying Conversation.

Today we'll be going over the words and phrases of one of my favorite poems,

Chaayyams, Khoshbush.

So first I want to point out that it's absolutely incredible that this poem was written a thousand years ago

and that we're studying Persian here in the 21st century

and can still very easily understand the language in this poem. Now, it may have some

wording that we don't exactly use in conversation, but again, the fact that it's comprehensible

and so easily comprehensible to us is pretty interesting. Persian is a bit unique in this way. A lot of other

languages have evolved a lot more over time. So we're going to go over this full poem, what the

words mean, and also go over alternative ways to say the same sentiments with more modern

conversational language. But again, it doesn't stray very far from the way this poem was spoken.

So before we get started, let's listen to the full poem as read by my father, Jabba Chams.

So this is actually my father's debut on the podcast,

and it's quite a treat to hear him read it,

because he's actually a voice actor and a theater actor and he's recorded

a lot of poetry including the entire shahname of the Ferdosi. So it's quite a treat having

this audio recording to work with of him reading it with his incredible voice. And I want to note that

this is a poem he recites often as well. And I think he really abides by it in his life.
