Today I have with me two guests, Ted Stroll, president for the Sustainable Trails Coalition, and Jackson Ratcliffe, treasurer and board member. One thing I've heard from

some hikers that I've spoken with is that seeing a mountain biker in the wilderness would ruin

the experience for them. I've even talked with people who claim that seeing a rider,

who's made his way deep into the wilderness in the course of a few hours,

covering the ground that took them days to cover,

would cheapen the effort that they had to go through to hike into that place.

How would you respond to those comments from the hikers?

First off, I respect that concern.

I sat across the table from members of the Pacific Crest Trail Association at a meeting

that we had in May, in which they sincerely and fervently expressed that point of view,

that it diminishes their experience if they see a bicycle on a trail.

And I don't think it's up to us to denigrate that feeling any more than one should denigrate somebody's, you know,

organized religion or other strongly held point of view.

If they feel that way they do and we shouldn't try to talk them out of it,

for the people who tend to go to these areas, many of them derive deep meaning in life.
