the French president has pushed through a law raising the retirement age over there. And Emmanuel Macron did that because he was worried that France's parliament would not approve this bill which was fiercely contested raising the retirement age from 64 to 62. So basically he was able to somehow and we'll discover how get this legislation through the parliament without a full parliamentary vote.

And that's just going to make kind of the inflammation of the situation worse. So let me see Macron claims he told government ministers that his interest would have been to go to a vote. But he considered it that the present time the financial and economic risks are too great basically saying no this the math does not add up we have to do this.

And you guys know how they do it in Paris we've talked about the riding many times going back to the yellow jacket yellow vest to movement remember that back during his first term and that went on for a long time and it was extremely violent.

So after going through that ruling kind of by himself is not what he wanted to do this pension plan have gone over like basically been going on for like two months the Senate or upper house approve the bill early Thursday.

But like us they have two houses and the disarray in a lower house occurred because macrons renaissance party does not hold a parliamentary majority and even like the so called right wingers over there who are like you know soft lips over here.

They were the guys once pushing to raise the retirement agent to 65 which is where we had it for like decades and decades and they're net but they post out the closer it got because those nationwide protests and you guys have all seen those going on in social media.

So he was somehow able to avoid a national assembly vote.

It is legal over there and I'm just trying to figure out oh here we go all right I'm coming I see it a couple paragraphs down.

But macron did not want to get defeated on this he's been like looking for this pension age rage since he took office in 2017.

So the government used a measure known as the 49.3 is named after the relevant article the constitution the article 49.3 that allows certain bills to be passed without a vote a vote opposition lawmakers now have 24 hours to file a no confidence motion and have out to do so if the no confidence motion is rejected the bill stands and becomes the law of the land.

If it passes macrons prime minister and cabinet have to resign and the bill is rejected at that point macro could reappoint you know his current PM.

Chick name born or appoint a new prime minister.

But he basically has this threat hanging over you know he's he's threatened to dissolve the national assembly if a no confidence motion passes and that would lead to whole new parliamentary elections now that's kind of like a far fetched deal.

And macron is saying no no this is not me acting along because hey parliament is going to be able to vote on that no confidence motion.

So the guy is about that article 49.3 I know this is a little bit boring but let's just quickly get through it they use that several times last year to pass budget bills.

But the pension bill is far more contentious because of how the French people are they they the pension in France is sacred.

And work is widely viewed as like kind of a prison sense over there and it's only made bearable by knowing that at age 62 you're going to get generous pension benefits.
