Summary

#968 Summary Golf Instructor Gareth Winslow joins us from New Zealand to discuss his teaching philosophies that lead to writing the book 'Playing the Lie: A Hard-Hitting Look at the Ridiculous Theories Ruining Your Golf Game', which challenges common misconceptions in golf instruction. He emphasizes the importance of fundamentals, proper warm-up techniques, and the significance of grip and setup in achieving a consistent golf swing. Winslow also critiques the overwhelming amount of information available to golfers today, advocating for a return to basic principles that truly impact performance.Takeaways Golfers often receive misguided advice from well-meaning friends. Fundamentals are crucial for improving golf performance. Many golfers practice ineffectively, focusing on the wrong aspects. A proper warm-up is essential to prevent injuries. The order of learning in golf should start with putting and short game. Grip position significantly affects swing mechanics. Simplicity in technique leads to better consistency. Misconceptions about shoulder turn can hinder performance. Golf instruction should be based on cause and effect. Practicing with a clear goal is vital for improvement. Shoulders are kind of a, I don't say pet peeve, but kind of a sticking point in some respect.

0:18.0

If you look at the larger parts of the body, the bigger muscles, the bigger

0:22.1

area, so talking shoulders, chest, back, so on, most of the upper body. They're bigger muscles,

0:28.3

they're stronger muscles. They tend to often overpower what the arms and the club do in certain

0:35.5

situations. A little bit of an issue when you like, if you watch some golf on TV,

0:40.1

it's often something referred to by commentators that a certain golfer has a huge shoulder

0:45.8

turn.

0:46.3

You hear this a lot.

0:47.3

And there seems to be this attempt to tie shoulder turn to distance.

0:52.6

And I don't know that it's really correct because you can see

0:55.7

beginner golfers who just have the most enormous turn you've ever seen to the point where

1:00.4

they can't even see the ball in their back swing because their head gets pulled out of the way

1:05.0

so they might have an enormous shoulder turn and they can't hit a driver more than 100, 150 yards.

1:11.4

So I don't think there's a direct correlation with how far someone turns their shoulders

1:16.1

and how far the ball goes.

1:17.2

So I think this is where the problem starts.
