Driving down the road, old blended with a new, a familiar skeleton wearing an unfamiliar face.

He felt the dissonance like body blows, the cumulative effect piling up as he passed woods turned into subdivisions and fields that were now lots.

Here and there, though, he saw the past peek through.

The generation that had come before him had mostly passed,

but many of their landmarks remained from to recognize.

Passing through a curve, his gaze swept across the turnout road to the right.

In the triangle of land, shaped

by the two roads, squatted a single-story cedar house. The sagging and the wraparum porch made

a look brooding, and he wondered how long before the oddly peaked roofline did the same. Built in the
