Summary

The tax planning process doesn't change for single retirees—but the margin for error does.

In this episode, we explain why taxes behave differently when there's only one tax bracket, no spousal coordination, and no survivor window to clean things up later. We discuss why IRMAA thresholds hit sooner for single filers and how small income decisions can have outsized consequences.

We walk through a simple framework that focuses on understanding your income baseline, where your assets are held, how Medicare premiums factor into tax decisions, and why time horizon matters more when there's only one lifetime to plan around.

This episode isn't about squeezing out every last tax advantage. It's about protecting flexibility, avoiding irreversible mistakes, and building a plan that works without a backup.

Although this show does not provide specific tax, legal, or financial advice, you can engage Devin or John through their individual firms.

Certainly listen to the podcast for quite some time and happy to be a part of it for a change. First time back in a podcast studio in about five years for me. Yeah, well, welcome back and you picked a good one to make you return to. Yes, sir. You know, I was telling Jeremy, we don't have that many guests here when we recorded last week's episode, you know, for our listeners, they know that, you know, we're not just one of those shows that has, has guest on and they get to pitch their book or whatever their service is. We want to use those selectively, but I do have a very high level of confidence in the team that we've assembled here.

You know, John and I kind of laid some of the foundation in the very beginning, talking about some of the differences between singles and married couples. And we also, you know, we're very careful to define what a single person is. And as John pointed out, that all of us will either be dead or single at some point in the future. 100% chance.
