Summary

For single retirees, Social Security isn't just another filing decision. It's the foundation of the entire retirement income plan.

In this episode, we explain why claiming decisions matter more when there's no spouse, no survivor benefit, and no backup income stream. We walk through the four filters we use with single clients, including prior marriages, life expectancy, retirement income needs, and the tradeoffs between delaying Social Security and drawing from investment assets.

We also discuss the emotional side of these decisions—fear of running out of money, fear of dying too early, and the pressure of making irreversible choices alone.

This episode isn't about finding the "perfect" strategy. It's about building a plan you can stick with, even when markets and assumptions don't cooperate.

0:34.5

I did have one question for you, Devin. I'm putting you on the spot.

0:37.7

All right. I listened to last week's podcast, and I think what everybody wants to know is if you

0:42.5

have chosen your word for the year yet. I have not. I have not. You know, the one thing that

0:50.9

came out of that, you know, when we were talking about the word of the year is consistency, right?

0:55.5

So I think John and I resolve that we are going to try to be more consistent with releasing

1:20.8

if this episode runs short, maybe you'll know that it's that it's already started. But I was so

1:25.6

committed to consistency that I went ahead and came in

1:28.4

today to get this done. So no, that's as far as I've taken my word of the year. Anyway,
