Summary

Most traditions of herbal medicine across the world use the fundamental principle of antipathetic medicine in their approach to therapeutics. But in the practice of alchemical medicineβ€”based on Paracelsianismβ€” and in astro-herbalism, another approach is commonly used: sympathetic medicine. In this episode, we'll explore some of the principles of sympathetic medicine, how it differs from the antipathetic approach, and how we can work with it to deepen our understanding of plant to planet correspondences.

Β

Here's an overview of what you'll learn:

  • The key differences between sympathetic and antipathetic medicine

  • How to think through planetary correspondences in plants and more importantly, in practice

  • The various layers of herbal sympathy to planets such as organ affinities, energetics, and herbal actions

  • How herbs can paradoxically embody both sympathetic AND antipathetic qualities to a singular planetary force

  • Refining clinical application through the Triune System

Β

Warning: this is a slightly more advanced discussion relating to astro-herbalism and planetary correspondences in plants. If you're not familiar with this topic it might be a bit complex!

0:22.6

Hello, everybody, and welcome back to the plant path.

0:27.2

Appreciate you taking the time out of your life to join me here.

0:31.1

And in this episode, I'm going to be discussing some dynamics around sympathetic medicine in the practice of astro-urbalism.

0:42.5

Now, you might be wondering, what is sympathetic medicine? Is that where you just have the

0:47.7

utmost empathy and love and care for the people that you work with? Well, yes, hopefully

0:54.0

you should have those things when you're working with clients.

0:57.4

You should certainly have empathy.

0:58.7

But when I'm talking about sympathetic medicine, that's not really what we're talking about.

1:03.6

This is a concept that goes back to the time of Paracelsus, the Swiss alchemist and physician.

1:13.8

This is a concept much exemplified throughout the hermetic tradition, alchemy,

1:22.0

and the practice of medicine, Paracelsian medicine,

1:26.6

as well as in the development of Hahnemann's homeopathy.

1:32.8

But I want to discuss it here in the context of astro-erbalism. Now, basically, we have, let's

1:40.3

to give a little context here. So sympathetic medicine is in contrast to antipathetic medicine.

1:47.2

Antipathetic medicine is a little easier to describe.

1:50.2

So I'll talk about that first.

1:51.6

And it's very simple.

1:53.0

Opposites balance.

1:54.7

So if you are too hot, you cool someone down. If they're too dry, you moisten them. If they're too moist,

2:04.2

you dry them out. They're too tense. You relax them. Antipathetic medicine is really at the basis

2:11.6

of most systems of herbal medicine around the world. Ayurveda is antipathetic medicine.
