Summary

Earth has often been compared to a spaceship, one that's successfully orbited our star and the galaxy many times over billions of years. So what about moving our planet or even converting it or another world into a spaceship? Can we use entire planets to cross the intergalactic void to settle planets in distant galaxies or superclusters? And what sort of engine and drive could move a whole planet? Hello, SFIA audio listeners. In this month's Nebula exclusive, big alien theory,

0:05.2

we're asking the reason alien civilizations might be rare is because most aliens are huge.

We so often talk about building spaceships to visit and colonize new planets, but what

0:29.6

about making a spaceship out of a planet?

0:45.1

So today we're back to the Generation Ship series to discuss building spaceships that are of a planetary scale or even outright moving entire planets between stars or even galaxies.

0:52.7

And incidentally, if you're new to the channel, welcome to

0:55.9

S-FIA, probably the only place on the internet where a serious discussion about moving

1:01.4

entire planets would qualify as fairly mundane. Why would you ever want to move an entire

1:08.3

planet? That's a good question, but it turns out that we might have a few good reasons.

1:13.6

First, we might realize that something is about to go terribly wrong with our Sun, as will

1:19.0

happen when it begins to run out of fuel and slowly heats up and expands, and we'll want

1:24.0

to move Earth.

1:25.5

Even as early as about one billion years from now, the Sun's

1:28.6

luminosity may have increased sufficiently to render the Earth uninhabitable. We've talked

1:33.9

before about ways of extending a star's lifetime, but those are very time and labor-consuming

1:39.6

tasks. Moving a tiny rocky planet-like Earth is, comparatively, a weekend project, so you might

1:46.5

decide to just migrate Earth to a new, younger solar system.

1:51.0

Of course we could face a more immediate solar emergency, perhaps of an artificial variety,

1:56.7

such as an artificial black hole being dumped into the sun.
