with salt-loving microorganisms that sport a deep red pigment thriving on what the water leaves behind.

However, the water that does remain is so saturated with salt that migratory birds who stop for a refreshing bird bat suddenly

Once they calcify, these salty layers trapped the poor creatures in a matter of minutes,
