Summary

God seeks us and we are called on to seek others for Him. We don't know much about Philip but we know that he was a true "seeker." Christ sought Him and he sought to bring others to Jesus.

The Lord Jesus had 12 original disciples, but those men were just the first of many more followers of Christ.

They are an example for us to learn from and a reminder that God works in ordinary people.

There is a very real sense in which the Lord seeks us,

and we are called on to seek the Lord.

Both of those truths are found in Scripture,

and both of them are illustrated in the life of one of our Lord's

original disciples whose name was Philip. Now we don't know a great deal about Philip. He shows up,

of course, in every one of the list of the disciples and not only the ones in the gospel records,

but also the one in Acts chapter one, which means he was faithful. He was a true disciple all the way

through. But the only gospel writer that records for us any of the details of Philip's life is John.

And so when you come to John chapter number one, early on in the ministry of Christ in the record

of some of the first disciples, Philip pops up.

And then throughout the gospel, according to John, we find some references to him.

Now, I must tell you that not all the references to Philip are becoming.

Not all of them are positive.

In fact, when you see him, you sometimes get the idea that perhaps he was not the most intelligent or the most believing.

He was a man of question.

He was a man who, it seems, was trying to figure things out.

Maybe some of us can identify with him a little more readily than we can with some of the other disciples.
