Hello and welcome to the Sophie Bridge on Sunday podcast. It's Budget Day tomorrow and we had a special

budget show to look ahead to it.

I sat down with Chancellor Philip Hammond to talk about austerity, Brexit and his shopping habits

also came up. And the shadow chancellor John McDonald gave his reaction to that interview and

needless to say, he wasn't impressed. The B-word is back, but this time, fortunately, it's not Brexit but the budget.

Tomorrow, the Chancellor will show off its red box and reveal how he plans to deliver on the Prime Minister's promise to end austerity.

But making the sums add up is no easy task.

He has no parliamentary majority to raise taxes

and he's bound by self-imposed restrictions on borrowing.

Throw in opposition parties who are already lining up to call foul

if he doesn't give them what they want.

And conservative colleagues who don't trust him because of Brexit,

it's fair to say the pressure is really on.

When I sat down with Philip Hammond, I started by asking if austerity is really coming to an end,

and if so, what that actually means.
