The New York Times said his latest book (2020), ‘PHARMA: Greed, Lies and the Poisoning of America’, was “a withering and encyclopedic indictment of a drug industry that often seems to prioritize profits over patients…[it] reads like a pharmaceutical version of cops and robbers." Topics covered in this episode: •The history of the drug industry. •How did Big Pharma become so good at convincing us that we are supposed to take drugs on the regular? •Is the Coronavirus pandemic a once in a lifetime business opportunity for drug companies? •The history of drug reps and the relationship with the medical industry. •How drug pricing has been manipulated behind the scenes. •Orphan drugs. •‘You messed with the wrong mother’. Today's episode is very near and dear to my heart because as a pharmacist and as a child

have come to the understanding that pharmaceuticals are not the best way that we avoid sickness

as humans. Though I am a pharmacist, I very much struggle with the idea of the United States being a

medicated society, where we have a pill for every ill, and we almost have a collective reliance on medications.

0:56.2

Medications have become so common that we consider them normal.

We consider it a normal part of the human experience and of human aging that we will need three, four, five, or more medicines.

1:16.5

The problem is the pharmaceutical industry has been plagued by greed, lies, and a long history

1:27.1

of using patients for profit as well as using patients as

1:34.7

unknowing guinea pigs in the overall effects of medications on the population.

pharmaceutical industry as we know it.

The Sackler family are not only well known because of their relationship to Oxycontin and

2:28.8

the genocide via opioid toxicities, but they are also the originators of the idea of the drug rep coming to
