It's Depression Mode. I'm John Moe. I'm glad you're here. Several years ago, now, I went out for drinks one night with my friend Peter Sagle and a couple of other pals. Peter is the host of the NPR quiz show,

Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. And that night, Peter did most of the talking. He told us about

the ugliest divorce I had ever heard about, his divorce. He didn't tell me everything, of course,

and it was clearly not a matter of one side being right and the other side being wrong.

Divorces are more complicated than that.

I've been around long enough in this world to see some divorces go smoothly, even some that were friendly and positive, and some that went bad.

But in terms of ones that go bad, this was the worst.

His ex-wife wouldn't speak to him, and his three daughters stopped speaking to him as well.

He didn't just lose a marriage. He lost an entire family. Peter wasn't looking for advice that

night. We didn't provide any. He just wanted to lay his

burdens down. They were heavy burdens. Then, a few years after that, Peter was my first guest on
