I'm Mick Garris and this is post-mortem. These days horror is a pretty insular genre.

Most horror filmmakers work almost exclusively in that field

either because that is their area of passion

or they've been consigned to it by success in that field.

But such was not always the case.

In the heyday of Hollywood, Alfred Hitchcock was known for his thrillers and even comedies

like Mr and Mrs. Smith before finding his greatest success in the horrors of Psycho and the Birds.

Howard Hawks directed Western's romantic comedies and The Thing from Another World.

Let's just leave Christian Nyeby out of the conversation for now.

Robert Wise directed the Sound of Music, West Side Story, and the Sand Pebbles,

as well as the haunting and the first Star Trek movie.

For the most part, directors were journeymen. the first Star Trek movie.
