Summary

88% of US and UK consumers want brands to help them be more sustainable in their daily lives and many are willing to pay a premium for plastic-free products. But despite consumer demand, plastic is everywhere and downright impossible to avoid. On today's show: 9 places those pesky polymers lurk, plus hacks for avoiding them. Here's a preview: [4:00] Here's what you never knew about tires [8:00] How to shop for tea like a conscious consumer [15:00] Your dish sponge's dirty little secret [17:30] Are e-cigarettes any better than regular cigs from an environmental standpoint? [25:00] The latest research into cloth versus disposable diapers [28:00] Microplastics vs. liquid plastics in makeup   Resources mentioned: Customers Hate Plastic Packaging, So Why Do Companies Keep Using It? (via Forbes) Gaia Guy Etee Microplastics: Which Beauty Brands Are Safe To Use? (via The Guardian) Pukka Republic of Tea Numi Tea Wot Not Beat The MicroBead (The Plastic Soup Foundation's free app)   * Join our (free!) community here. * Find your tribe. Sustainable Minimalists are on Facebook, Instagram + Youtube. * Email me and say hello! MamaMinimalistBoston@gmail.com.   Our Sponsors:* Thank you to LifeStraw! https://lifestraw.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/sustainable-minimalists/exclusive-content

Well, hello there listeners and welcome back. My name is Stephanie Safarian and you're listening to episode

345 of Sustainable Minimalists at Toys Weekly show about Intentional and Ecominimalist Living. On today's show I am answering a listener's question about

0:16.4

places in which plastic might be hidden that we wouldn't normally think of. So hidden sources of microplastics and

0:25.2

alternative replacements to avoid them. Let's start off by getting on the same page. What on

0:31.1

earth is a microplastic? Well a microplastic is a plastic

0:35.2

particle that measures less than 5 millimeters in size. There are also nanoplastics which are even

0:42.4

smaller than microplastics.

0:44.9

There are two basic kinds of microplastics. There are primary microplastics and secondary

0:51.2

microplastics. The primary ones, primary microplastics, are intentionally

0:57.6

manufactured to be small. There are the microbeeds and personal care products.

1:02.6

We'll get to them later.

1:04.0

They're the pellets used in plastic manufacturing.

1:07.9

So primary microplastics are made small on purpose.

1:12.0

And then there are the secondary

1:13.4

microplastics which are the result to the consequence of plastics

1:19.2

durability. So plastic is quite durable, that's why it has, that's one of the reasons why it has risen to prominence.

1:26.4

But the durability is really also a double-edged sword, because as these durable plastics get broken down by oceans and

1:36.9

sunlight and waves they break down into fragments they get smaller and

1:42.1

smaller but they never truly disappear.

1:45.2

Presumably, microplastics will remain on this earth for centuries and centuries,

1:51.5

800-ish years on average.

1:55.8

Now another quick reminder, these microplastics,
