entered an engineering competition run by a technology company called

Microchip. Contestants had to use an electronics kit provided by the company to design an original piece of hardware.

The winner got 15 grand, second place got 7,500, and so on.

Thousands of people entered.

Arpeno was one of the runners up and the only one from Asia.

She built an advanced communications jammer,

a device essentially the disrupted radio and cell waves.

Placing in the US contest made Arpena something of a celebrity in Hyderabad.

And the next spring she appeared on a local TV broadcast to talk about her invention.

It was like a mixture of two different chips on matter.
