Summary

Joining me on today’s podcast are Nikki and Leah, founders of Ohne who talk about everything you ever needed to hear about periods. These girl bosses are changing the period industry by storm and making an important impact, by offering an organic tampon subscription service which helps give back to School Club Zambia to provide schoolgirls with menstrual education. I honestly learnt so much in this episode and was really shocked to hear about what sorts of nasty chemicals were in mainstream tampons. We also answer some of your questions related to periods too! Hello?

0:15.3

Welcome back to another episode of On the Line.

0:18.8

Speaking of On the Line, I'm here with the founders of On. That was a great

0:23.2

interest. Thanks. I was pretty good. Before we get into this episode, I just want to let you

0:29.9

know that you can get a free box of On products using the code Estate VIP. They just told me

0:36.7

about this. I'm very excited about it, so I wanted to put it at the

0:39.0

beginning of the episode because I would love you all to go and try these products. They're amazing,

0:44.9

and the branding is super cute. But just so you know, it's UK only. So firstly, who are you guys?

0:50.9

And why are you on the show today? So my name is Nikki and I'm one of the founders

0:55.2

of On. I'm Leah and On is an organic tampon subscription service and we launched about a year ago.

1:02.9

Right. And okay a subscription service. So how does this for, okay, let me just back up. Why?

1:09.6

Why did you start this? Okay, so right back at the beginning. So let's rewind to 2016, end of 2016. Nikki and I, actually, let's go even further back. So Nick and I met uni on our very first day of, we're at Sussex University. We got put in the rooms next door to each other. Someone's great decision. And then just, I think that evening we were dancing on tables and just bonded instantly. So then fast forward like six and a half years. We were, yeah, 2016, end of 2016, and there's us over a glass of wine. Having to catch up, Nikki starts a period. Or I think you were like, I'm prepared. Yeah, I'm prepared, but my period's going to come, I think it's going to come, went upstairs into my house and not my proudest moment, I'd bought some pads, mainstream pads that were covered in purple huts and let you take over. I mean, I basically just went upstairs, like rummaging through all of her things as you do when you're unprepared, just like take anything you can find. Open up this pad and I was like sat on the toilet and I just noticed for the first time like, like, why does this look like this? And I just got so angry. Yeah. Maybe partly the wine, maybe partly the situation. Why does sometimes bring up anger, doesn't it? Yeah, it does. It definitely does. Anyway. So I just ran down the stairs and I was like, Leah, what is the deal with this? Like, why do the products that we buy look like this?

2:21.2

Like, I'm 26 years old. Like, everything else I buy really reflects my sort of personal taste,

2:26.3

brands I like, you know, everything like that. And these pads were just covered in like

2:30.6

fluorescent colors and then purple hearts on the actual pad. So we started talking a lot about how, or kind of what we felt when we had a period. So the fact that we were putting tampons up our sleeve every time we were walking to a restaurant. And for me, I don't know why it's a personal thing. I cannot get a non-applicated tampon. And like, Kedges does not go in. Like, Nikki, it's the total opposite. but I cannot get a non-applicated temper. Right like Kedges does not go it and like Nikki it's a total

2:51.1

opposite but I cannot get a non-applicator tampon. I mean I remember the very first time I used a tampon it was a non-applicator tampon and I was on a school trip and my friends were like it's easy just shove it up there and like when you're that age you don't even know what that even means. But just shove it up there even mean like where does it go?

3:07.8

Which direction?

3:09.3

And I remember just thinking like, when you're that age, you don't even know what that even means. What does shove it up there even mean? Like, where does it go?

3:08.4

Which direction?

3:10.2

And I remember just thinking like, I'm so confused. And it was kind of painful, actually, weirdly, the first time. Okay, I'm going to just put this out there. I still find a non-applicator painful. Yeah. I don't know why. and it might be like the angles that my vagina slants backwards,

3:23.7

but I cannot get it up.

3:25.1

I'm just convinced you don't put it high enough up.
