It was 1979 in the Andean town of Embado, Ecuador,

when young girls started vanishing at an alarming rate.

In May of 1979, young Hortensia Lazado was selling newspapers.

Her mother was pregnant and they needed extra money.

A friendly man approached Hortensia while she was out.

He was new to the area and needed a tour guide as he was lost.

She walked with him to the town's outskirts and never returned.

One morning, Maria Massabonda inned sent her daughter

to the shop for a few things they needed around the house.

She was supposed to buy a bus ticket to return to town,

but she never came home.

On Valentine's Day, 1980, Carlos Jacome was busy working at his office.

He was a well-respected businessman in Embado,

owning a town bakery and having an office about 15 blocks away.
