The work remains. Today is the first step of a long and difficult journey, but an important one.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the U.S. and Russia agreed on four principles

aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, following talks that lasted more than four hours in Saudi Arabia.

CNN's Alex Marquart breaks them down.

The first of which is to improve the functionality of both the embassies in Washington and Moscow.

Both the Russian-American embassies have been gutted in the past three years.

The second was to name a high-level negotiating team for Ukraine. And then they talked about laying the groundwork for cooperation on geopolitical opportunities.

And very interestingly, Rubio talks about historic, economic, and investment potential opportunities.

So it's clear that they are looking past the war in Ukraine.

And then the final thing that they agreed on was just that the five men would continue to talk.

Ukraine wasn't invited to this sit down.

And President Vladimir Zelenskyy said in response to these talks,

Kiv won't give in to Russia's ultimatums.

Hamas says it will release the dead bodies of four Israeli hostages on Thursday.

The head of the group's negotiating team says it will also release six living hostages on Saturday,

instead of the three that had been expected.
