Guaranteed Human. Good Morning Football is a production of the NFL in partnership with IHeart Radio. Eight days till kickoff. Welcome to Good Morning Football. We're live. We're in New York City. It is September 1st. My name's K. Adams, Peter Shrager, Kyle Brett, DeAngelo. What's going on? Why do you give me the intro like that? Because you're the guests. No, you deserve it, man.

0:56.9

We're excited to have you here. If we're here, he'd give you a hell of a better intro than I would. Just take what you forget. It would be 15 seconds, cool. How'd your feedback go from DeAndre Hopkins? We'll get into that today. We're not going to get into that today. No? You talked at length about the issue with you and he in practice in hard knocks back in the day. Did he not, did you not reach out to you? No, he didn't reach out to me. Did you reach out to him? No, I did not. Okay. At GMFB. We'll dig into that throughout the three hours show. It is time for the lead block. We block. We block. Now, welcome in Tom Pellasero. Tom. Welcome to the program.

Thank you for being here right off the top to set the agenda in the tone and give us the headlines. Yesterday, there was a deadline at 4 p.m. for cutdowns for rosters to 53 men. We got a surprise out of New England. Give us the details that we all need to know this morning about the release of Cam Newton by the Patriots. Well, first of all, Kay, Mack Jones won the starting quarterback job in New England. He was the better quarterback throughout the course of camp and the preseason.

1:18.6

He was the more consistent quarterback. He really impressed the Patriots on a daily basis.

1:23.6

One thing that has always made Bill Belichick great is he is willing to adjust his plan,

1:29.1

do what is best for the team. In this case, it is starting a rookie quarterback who,

1:33.7

in talking to coaches and scouts prior to this year's draft, was probably the most ready to

1:38.3

start in week one of any of those quarterbacks. So it'll be Mac Under Center, September 12th

1:44.0

against the Dolphins.

1:45.2

So what's next now for Cam Newton? There wasn't much of a market for him back in March when he

1:50.9

re-signed on a one-year $5.5 million deal with the Patriots. That is backup quarterback type of money.

1:58.0

Now, Cam is 32 years old at this point. He, of course, has a big personality, a

2:03.0

unique play style. He's also, as we now know, based on him missing time last week, not fully

2:08.8

vaccinated. That generally is not the profile that NFL teams are looking for in a backup

2:14.7

quarterback. And because Cam has made it so much money in his career,

2:18.1

and because he has offsets in his Patriots contract, if he's signed right now in a minimum

2:22.4

type deal to be somebody's backup, he would, in essence, be working for free. The better option

2:28.4

for Cam at this point, maybe to wait, see if there's an injury somewhere down the line,

2:33.5

and then maybe Superman flies in to save the day, okay? Tom, thank you so much for being here. Invaluble information setting the tone here on a Wednesday. Appreciate you'll talk to you throughout the three hours here on Good Morning Football and, of course, leading into kickoff, which is eight days away. Huge move by Bill Belichick in the front office. A lot of ins and outs as my earring pops out of my ear and rolls on the floor. What do we make of the Patriots releasing Cam Newton tricks?

2:56.3

Yeah, there were a lot of memes and a lot of jokes.

2:59.3

Yesterday was a tough day in New England,
