Summary

Most successful super-savers eventually realize their strategies need to evolve — but Amy Minkley discovered hers were almost destroying her. After two decades of rigid financial discipline led her to burnout in Bangkok, she found the FI community at exactly the right moment. Brad sits down with Amy, who he met at the Economy Conference, to unpack her winding path from high-paying corporate job to international teacher to slow traveler in Bali. Amy's journey touches on leaving secure employment, teaching in Japan, mini-retirements, geo-arbitrage, breaking contracts, asking for jobs back, scarcity mindset, and eventually building a life in Bali. Her story illustrates how childhood money beliefs can shape decades of behavior, the power of fear setting to overcome barriers, and why slow travel offers something rushed tourism never can. And Amy's story has a little bit of everything. I say that fairly often and it almost sounds right,

0:13.5

but this is the example of literally the story having everything.

0:18.0

And just the short list of topics that we could potentially talk about are leaving a high-paying job,

0:23.3

georbitrage, teaching in Japan, mini-retimerons, international teaching, slow travel, gap years,

0:28.8

Bali, one more year syndrome, finding Phi, and then going to every Phi in person event you could

0:34.7

possibly find. Breaking contracts, asking for jobs back, scarcity mindset, online teaching with kids

0:41.5

in California. I mean, literally we could have probably five to ten episodes here with Amy, so

0:47.2

this might be part one of N, but I think you're absolutely going to love Amy Minkley. Welcome to Choose a Phi.

Thanks, Fred. I'm super excited to be here. Oh, this is going to be great, Amy. And yeah, like I said,

1:07.1

I met you at economy. We became fast friends and we knew we had to do this episode, but more importantly,

1:12.8

yeah, it was just so wonderful to meet you. And you helped me with the one more year syndrome breakout

1:19.2

group, which wound up being a rousing success, though. I think we were a little worried about it at the

1:24.1

beginning, because what's so nice about these Phi events, and I think the power of in-person events,

1:31.0

whether they're choose a Phi local meetup groups to camp Phi's, to economies, to Shitakeweta,

1:37.1

your Phi freedom retreat, which is going to happen later this year, is people just become

1:43.3

these fast friends, right? And we have so much in common, and it really is about meeting other

1:49.6

people there, meeting friends as opposed to listening to a speaker necessarily. And I think you and I

1:55.3

realize that right away, just in that very one hour presentation. Yeah, definitely. I mean, I feel

2:01.0

like when we have the same values as far as money, so many other things fall into place. And we

2:07.4

think outside the box, people in the fire movement, we are living intentionally, we want to design our

2:12.8

life and really utilize our time and our energy to the best of our ability. And so I just find that
