Summary

From the series, "Eating & Drinking" as part of Practicing the Way. The Lord’s supper, communion, the eucharist – whatever you call eating and drinking with God, this practice is at the very center of the church. And yet it’s changed over the years. What started out as a full meal, around a table, in a home, with a spirit of gratitude, joy and celebration, has since become a quiet, contemplative, individualistic meditation on our sin and its cost to Jesus. How did this practice evolve? Or devolve? And how could we re-imagine this practice as a meal?

0:23.3	communion. Summer is my favorite time in the city. Every day I look forward to
0:31.1	cycling home from work. It's about a mile from our office over on 13th to my
0:35.5	house on 26th and in between the office and my house are about 497 restaurants.
0:41.9	And this time of year as I cycle home around six at night I ride past hundreds if
0:48.3	not thousands of Portlanders literally spilling out not only to the outdoor
0:53.3	seating but then onto the sidewalk and then into the street loud, rock-iss, noisy,
0:59.0	lot of laughter, a little bit tipsy and it's 6 p.m. And there's just something
1:05.6	about eating outside in the heat of summer around a table with people that
1:11.9	we love food in our stomach, a glass of wine in our hand if you're over 21
1:16.6	some of you are not. There's just something to that moment, a presence to the
1:23.6	person across the table from you to your own body and even your soul and even
1:28.8	more to God. I mean we live in one of the best cities in the world for food.
1:33.0	People vacation here, I mean every Sunday I meet people on a road trip or on
1:38.2	vacation what are you here for to eat? I mean literally people fly here from all
1:43.1	over the world to eat through our city and I love that. It's one of my favorite
1:48.6	things about our city and there's just something in the deep in the psyche of
1:53.2	the rose city that says August 6 p.m. must go eat outside with friends or family.
