Summary

From the series "31 Days Of Prayer." As part of our initiative to start the year off in prayer, in this teaching we explore the Ignatian prayer of Examen as a practice by which we slow down, become more present to love, and “find” God in our everyday life.

I would ask how you are, but in light of the last few days, I'm guessing that you are

0:19.7

feeling scared or angry or anybody just tired, you know, wherever you fall on the political

0:29.1

spectrum. David Brooks, in his opinion, column a few days ago called Wednesday the day the

0:34.0

fever broke in America. And I love that idea just because I love to plot the pain of

0:40.2

the last week and recent memory into a narrative of healing and renewal and to kind of fly

0:48.4

in the face of the news cycle and social media. And I do hold out like in private a bit,

0:53.8

a cautious optimism for the future of our country and our city. But I don't know if he's right

1:00.3

metaphor of Babylon, all right, not of anything else. The kingdom that we are a part of is

1:30.9

not even a kingdom, it's a democracy and it can and it will be shaken if not now than

1:35.7

later. It's just a matter of when not if. But we are receiving not a democracy, but a

1:41.5

kingdom with a king and it cannot be shaken. It is here now and it is coming. And this

1:48.9

last week is just yet another invitation we've had many over the last year to recalibrate

1:55.3

our hope, our ultimate hope, not that we don't work and act for justice and all of that,

2:02.0

but to recalibrate our ultimate hope over the horizon to the return of the king to make

2:07.1

all things new. That doesn't take away the grief and the loss of recent memory, but it

2:13.2

does put it in a whole new perspective. You know, I've said this to you a lot, so let

2:17.3

me just play the broken record kind of angle again. If your highest value in life is to
