I don't remember a ton about sixth grade.

I remember memorizing lots of poems for Mrs. Brown's class.

I remember Mr. Marciano thinking my name was Hildegard and me being too shy to correct

him.

I remember playing Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board at Sleep Over Parties.

And I remember a song that came out that winter.

Just like every other kid all across the land in 1988, I felt this song.

Parents do not understand.

They don't understand why I need Tobago shoes, why I need to tie the ends of the laces into

tight little coils.

They don't understand why I need to wear my backpack on just one shoulder, no matter how heavy

it is, or why I prefer tuning out the world with my walkman over talking to anyone.
