On May 27, 2001, Martin and Grisha Burnham were spending a rare night at a resort to celebrate their wedding anniversary. In the early morning hours, they were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, a terrorist group with ties to al-Qaeda. While their

capture made headlines locally, it wasn't until after the 9-11 attacks that international media

really began following their story. At the time, I was doing morning news at a radio station. I remember

scouring the AP Newswire every morning looking for an update. People all over the world were

gripped by their story and praying that somehow they would make it out alive. What had taken

you to the Philippines? Martin and I were missionaries with New Tribes Mission. We'd been there

16 years when this happened. Martin was a missionary pilot for our organization. Missionaries live

out in the middle of nowhere in the jungles and think of all the things you buy in a month.

We would buy them for them and box them up and send them in

and the medicines they needed and the homeschool stuff and the building materials, anything

they needed. That was our job to keep missionaries supplied and working well in the jungle
