Hi, this is Meredith Foster.

At 5 a.m. on the 24th of February this year, Maya Mikhailuk woke to the sound of explosions.

It was the sad and scary confirmation of what they had feared.

Russia had launched an attack on Ukraine and war had begun. From their apartment in Kiev, Maya's family could hear rockets exploding, something that's become a daily occurrence since the war started.

Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced. Nearly four million

refugees have crossed the border to countries like Poland and Romania. And for many, including Maya,

the decision whether to stay or leave is gut-wrenching. Maya is the co-founder and leader of a ministry

called International Partnerships. She and her husband have spent

25 years planning churches in Ukraine, and they pastor a congregation in Kiev. She spoke with us

from a bomb shelter in her apartment building. Hi, Meredithis. Hi, Maya. Thank you for joining me. So you can see

and hear me okay? Yes. Wonderful. You're in your bomb shelter, I see.

Yeah, we have right now no air raid, but I suspect that in one hour there will be one,

so I might as well start here rather than move around.

Plus it's dark already outside. We cannot keep light anywhere in the apartment, only in this

corridor where there's no window.
