Well, my name's Greg Eckert.

I'm a general dentist here in Austin, Texas,

0:58.9

but I like to moonlight as a sports scientist, essentially.

And it all kind of started for me back in the cigar swing dance days.

1:09.8

Believe it or not, yeah, believe it or not. I had a patient friend of mine, she was the best swing dancer in Austin. Ground her teeth like a beast, literally. War him down, half the height they ought to be. Made her night guard after night guard, concurrent with all this grinding. It was a lot of headache, neck, egg, jaw joint pain, and I couldn't seem to fix it. She taught me how to swing dance really well, and then she cheated on me and went and saw a different dentist. And she came to me and she said, hey, look, I went and saw this dentist and he hooked these electrodes up to me and he did this thing to me and he aligned my jaw and he made me this thing, and my headaches are gone. I'm like, wow, what did you do? So I went and found out about it. And that's how I learned about what I do in my practice, neuromuscular dentistry. And it was a technique invented in the late 60s by a dentist named Bernard Yankleson out of Seattle. Bernard Yankleson was a prosodontist, a dentist that got some advanced training after dental school to learn how to work with complex restorative cases. He really loved doing dentures. Dentors are difficult because there's really no starting point. There's no teeth to touch. So it's kind of like, all right, well, where do I put the teeth so that the jaws line up, yada, yada? He decided to use ultra ultra low frequency tens. A lot of people are familiar with

2:20.5

tens. This is a little different. It's 0.76 hertz. It's really meant to relax the muscles that support

2:27.3

the jaw. Just for reference, if you were using like a power dot unit, you could kick it up to like 100, 110,

2:32.5

and I think you activate fast switch muscle

2:34.9

fiber is over like 105 to like 135 let's say so he's using less than one would you say 0.75

2:41.0

yes yeah 0.76 so to be so I so we use that to relax the muscles that support the jaw so

2:48.8

we're talking to the trigeminal nerve trigeminal nerve talks to the muscles that support the jaw. So we're talking to the trigeminal nerve. Triginal nerve talks to the muscles that support the jaw.

2:52.9

We find physiologic rest of the jaw.

2:55.4

And then from there, we can find out where should the optimal position be for the teeth to touch.
