| 0:00.0 | This is the Friends of History Debating Society. I'm John Bachelor to New South Wales, Jeremy |
| 0:05.2 | Zachus, the Waragamba Dam at 96%. That translates into risk. |
| 0:13.0 | Jeremy, a very good day to you in Australia. |
| 0:16.0 | As of Saturday morning your time, the Waragamba was 96% and the spillover was pushing water downstream where there was already an |
| 0:26.5 | enormous amount of flooding. There were parts that were told to evacuate. |
| 0:32.0 | Does that include your neighborhood of Sydney? |
| 0:35.0 | Good day to you. |
| 0:37.0 | G'd day, John. |
| 0:38.0 | I know I can say I was lucky I wasn't quite in the evacuation zone downstream here in Sydney or southern Sydney I should say but it was very close because the |
| 0:46.6 | Warwick Amber actually where it stops and where it starts to basically send water into the Sydney area is a floodplain. |
| 0:54.0 | So you can imagine the War of Gamba Dam is actually up in the Blue Mountains, so it's in the |
| 0:57.6 | mountains area just to the west of Sydney here and that's where it traps the water. |
| 1:01.5 | But when it spills |
| 1:03.0 | it comes straight down onto a floodplain that then flows into Sydney, |
| 1:07.2 | and especially southern Sydney here. |
| 1:08.9 | So the evacuation areas were only a little bit away from me and when I say a little bit away it was |
| 1:13.8 | only three or four miles away and luckily enough we didn't have any issues but a |
| 1:17.8 | spillover from the Warreagamba is dangerous in every way because the reality |
| 1:22.2 | is the Waragamba Dam is a massive structure and at |
| 1:25.1 | 96% it is reaching the limits of its maximum capacity and when I say limits it's actually |
| 1:30.6 | also structural limits so it's not just physical water, which means that if there's |
| 1:35.0 | any more water behind it, there's the potential who can start to fracture, which is partly why not |
