Jeremy Zakis reporting on New South Wales, but we're heading to Victoria.

There's weather, but most importantly, there is a fire, the Grampians fire, in Victoria that has been let burn these last weeks.

Jeremy says there's good news about the Grampians fire.

However, there's also an anecdote here that is recognizable to Australians.

It's all new to me.

Kangaroos.

Kangaroos are one of the creatures that suffer at bushfires, like the koalas,

because they won't leave their habitat, or if they do, they don't run the right way,

or the fire moves too fast, or they get hung up on fences, and die or perish,

or have their foot pads burn badly as they hop across the burned out part of the forest.

Grampian's fire has been going for several weeks. All that sounds dire, and it is. But there is a

revelation here of what you do when joys are in trouble. Jeremy, a very good evening to you.

Joys are familiar to you.

These are young kangaroos that you tell me

will be big kangaroos someday,

but they're without their moms and dads,

and the fire is coming.
