Summary

In this shortcast, Kerry provides an overview of the Epistle to the Galatians, including some historical background. He focuses on what Paul teaches about the law, and how focusing on the law, in Paul's day or ours, brings problems. He highlights Paul's central message about Christ being able to change us, and make us new beings begotten by His atoning sacrifice. We are grateful for our sponsor, Lisa Spice, and for our editor, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

Hello and welcome to the Scriptures A Real podcast. This is the podcast where we talk about elements of the scriptures that have helped them become more real to us because we believe that helps us draw more power out of them and we need all the help we can get.

0:16.6

I'm your host, Kerry Milstein, and this is a shortcast where we'll do just an overview, a very short overview, of the book of Galatians.

0:23.6

You'll find that in the full episode where I talk with Dr. Stratharne, we cover a lot of the background of the Book of Galatian, so I won't go into that here.

0:32.6

There's some great stuff that we cover, and so I'm going to try and cover here a few things that aren't covered there

0:37.9

and or highlight them in a way that we didn't highlight them in that episode and so on and hopefully

0:43.9

give you this bird's eye you know big picture of the book of Galatians that I believe will help

0:49.5

you as you read each chapter to see how in each verse how they fit into the larger theme. So let's,

0:54.9

let's start by going over the book of Galatians. We'll talk a little bit about who it's

0:59.3

written to with Dr. Stratharne, but just to give you an idea, some disagreement as to whether

1:05.0

it's just the Gauls in particular who live in Glacier or these particular churches

1:09.4

that Paul had visited.

1:11.3

My guess is it's the latter.

1:13.2

So there's some idea that they may have been talking, that Paul may have been talking to

1:17.6

the Gauls in general, which is what Galatians is named after, or to those specific cities.

1:23.3

Gay Strathar and we'll explore that a little bit more with us, but we know he's writing to,

1:44.4

in general, the church in that area, my guess it would be to those cities that he had visited on his first mission. And he seems to be reporting a bit of what happened at the Jerusalem Council. And we'll explore that also with Dr. Stratharine and the history that we gain from there.

1:49.2

The main picture, the main point, and we'll explore this, as I said, more in depth there,

1:56.0

but he's dealing with questions about his authority because some people have been saying that Paul,

2:01.1

that the saints in Galatia should not listen to Paul because Paul has been teaching that they don't need to keep the law of Moses. And that's something that really bothers Paul. And so much of the

2:09.5

epistle will be addressing that question. So in many ways, he starts out by making sure they know

2:16.4

that he is an apostle. They should listen to him. And in fact, in chapter 1, verse 6, he says, I marveled that you are so soon removed from him that called you under the grace of Christ unto another gospel. So he's saying, why are you, did you stop listening to me? And the gospel you were converted to when I taught you and you're listening to someone else who's teaching you something

2:34.7

different. He says, which is not another. So, you know, you've been called into another gospel, but it's not another.
