Summary

In this shortcast Kerry gives an overview of the Epistle to the Ephesians. He covers the historical background and why that has an impact on how we understand the letter. He touches on how the world influences us, how Paul says we can combat that, and on unity. He also explores what Paul teaches about praise, how unity is not just about each other, but how Christ unifies us with God. He explores how Christ creates us anew and thus helps us leave the world and the way we have been behind, and what it has to do with covenants. He also explores how Christ's condescension allows for our ascension. He also touches on Paul's teachings on marriage and how we understand those in light of modern revelation. We are grateful for our sponsor Lisa Spice, and for our editor, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

This is the podcast where we talk about things that have become real to us in the Scriptures

0:12.7

because that allows us to apply it to our lives more and that allows us to draw more power

0:17.6

out of it and we certainly need more power from God in our lives today.

0:21.6

In fact, that's one of the things we'll talk about today.

I'm your host, Kerry Mealstein, and this is a shortcast where we are doing an overview of a book.

Sometimes when I interview a guest, we do a pretty good overview, and sometimes I feel like

0:33.8

my goal has been to typically do an overview for every one of the books.

0:38.9

Just sometimes we talk so much in one of the interviews that would be too redundant,

0:43.5

but I'm trying to do an overview of most of these books.

0:47.0

So today we're doing an overview of Ephesians.

0:50.2

So let me talk just a little bit about the epistle itself and about Ephesus. The epistle itself is one of the

0:59.0

epistles that Paul writes while he's in Rome. So let's give just a little bit of a background.

1:06.4

You remember that after his three journeys, he's taken captive in the temple because the

1:14.2

Jews are upset because he says that Gentiles can become part of the covenant and he's taken to

1:19.4

Caesarea and he appeals to Caesar and then he's sent off to Rome. And while he's in prison there

1:24.3

for years, he writes different letters. This is one of those letters.

1:27.9

We're actually not 100% sure that Paul is the author of this letter.

1:31.1

It's certainly inspired writing, whether it's from Paul or not.

1:34.1

But I think it's fairly good chance it's from Paul.

1:37.2

The question is, is it relate to the Saints in Ephesus?

1:40.0

In the earliest manuscripts, it doesn't mention Ephesus. That only comes later. And so there's
