Hey, it's Brad. I hope you're having a happy Thanksgiving. And we got something special for you today.

You may remember a few months ago, we got that big news about the overdose death of actor

Matthew Perry. We're here today with our law enforcement partners to announce federal criminal

charges. Perry had overdosed on ketamine, a drug that sometimes used to treat depression.

Five people were charged for allegedly playing a role in getting him the drug. And a lot of

these charges look like

common drug offenses, right? Distribution, possession with intent to sell. You've heard of these.

But a few defendants faced a more specific charge. Perry's personal assistant, for instance,

pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death. And charges like these

are used across the U.S., not only by the feds,

but also by many states. And here's what these charges mean. If you sell or supply someone

with the drug that causes their death, you could be blamed and punished for the death itself.

You could be even charged with manslaughter or murder. This is one of the most punitive approaches

to overdose deaths this country

has ever adopted, and lately, it's being used more and more. It's truly gone national.
